Photographs of Empty Graves to be Exhibited at Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Exhibits

Beginning October 19 and running through November 25 two of my photographs will be on exhibit at galleries in Lubbock, Texas for the annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration.

The Buddy Holly Center’s Fine Art Gallery will open their exhibit, Celebración, Friday, October 26.  The exhibit will run through Sunday, November 25 and will be exhibiting my photograph Grave Exhumed by Hurricane Rita, 2008

The following is taken from the artist's statement for Grave Exhumed by Hurricane Rita, 2008: "Made in the summer of 2008, the photograph depicts an empty grave in a small cemetery in southern Louisiana. Located less than a mile from the Gulf of Mexico, the grave was nestled with others under the shade of a small gathering of moss-filled oak trees. Many of the graves were undisturbed, but a few still exhibited scars from Hurricane Rita that directly hit this area three years before.  This open, water-filled vault relinquished its contents at the height of Rita's fury.  It remained abandoned and empty for three years, with only an undisturbed tombstone to identify its former possession."

The International Cultural Center at Texas Tech University will open their Día de los Muertos exhibit, Friday, October 19.  The exhibit will run through Friday, November 16 and will be exhibiting my photograph Who'll put flowers on a flower's grave?, 2010. Made at a catholic cemetery in New Iberia, Louisiana, it depicts an empty vault containing discarded flowers. The photograph’s title was inspired from the lyrics of a Tom Waits song entitled: Flower’s Grave.

Both exhibits will be part of the annual Día de los Muertos Procesión, to be held in Lubbock on Friday, November 2 from 5pm – 10pm.
