Photograph Selected for Exhibit Celebrating Winter

Next month, A Smith Gallery, in Johnson City, Texas, will exhibit my photograph Saudade, 2011, in their juried show Winter, juried by Jean Caslin.

Caslin is a founding partner of Caslin Gregory & Associates: Consultants to Arts & Culture, which provides coaching for visual artists, as well as exhibition, fundraising, editorial, and event planning services for artists and organizations. From 1988 to 2005, she served as executive director and curator of Houston Center for Photography.

An online gallery of the exhibit has been posted.

Winter can be viewed from January 6 – February 12 at A Smith Gallery, located at 105 N Nugent Avenue, in Johnson City, Texas. The gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays from 11am – 6pm and Sundays from 11am – 3pm. Artists’ reception will be held on Saturday, January 28, from 4 – 7pm.

Hurricane Ike Photograph selected for the TPS 25th Members' Only Show

Opening in January, Options Gallery at Odessa College in Odessa, Texas will host of the Texas Photographic Society’s 25th Members’ Only Show. My photograph Nails, Screws, and Nuts, 2008 from the series Hurricane Ike: Images from the Debris Field was selected for this exhibit by the competition’s juror, Henry Horenstein.

Horenstein is a widely published and exhibited professional photographer and the author of more than two dozen books, including the classic texts Black & White Photography, Beyond Basic Photography, and Color Photography, and monographs such as Creatures, Canine, and Racing Days. His work has appeared in Life, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, and Town & Country. Horenstein is currently a professor at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he has taught photography for more than twenty years.

Friends also having work selected for the exhibit include: Susan Barnett, Marti Belcher, Tami Bone, Polly Chandler, Susan de Witt, Steve Goff, Kirsten Hoving, Ellen Jantzen, Carol Serur, Sharon Shero, Amanda Smith, and Ashton Thornhill. In this exhibit, Polly Chandler was awarded Honorable Mention for her work Along an Icy Pond.

The Texas Photographic Society’s 25th Members’ Only Show can be viewed from January 9 through March 9 at Options Gallery on the Odessa College campus, located at 201 W. University, in Odessa, Texas.

Silvershotz Folios 2011 Released!

I am happy to announce this past week the 4th annual Silvershotz Folios 2011 was released, which includes six photographs from my portfolio Hurricane Ike: Images from the Debris Field. This year’s Folios contains the work of 31 artists from 12 countries, including work from my friends Marti Belcher and Ann George.

The Folios journal is a special edition collection of work by contemporary emerging artists who are carefully selected by a jury panel of industry experts. Photographers from around the world submit portfolios that are evaluated on the following criteria: technical skills, a themed and cohesive body of work, consistent excellence in every image in the folio and the intellect behind the folios presented.

By being selected for inclusion in Folios, contemporary artists are assisted by Silvershotz in the worldwide promotion of their work. The Folios acts a formal introduction and recommendation to galleries, collectors, and institutions around the world so as to further participants’ careers. This has resulted in increasing the sales of work by Folios artists, in addition to being offered one person exhibitions and reproduction of their work in other fine art publications.

Folios is distributed worldwide, with 10,000 journals being shipped to 1400 bookstores in 17 countries plus a further 2,000 journals being sent to leading galleries and institutions in 19 countries. Major booksellers sell and can order the journal, and it can also be purchased online.

“Childhood, 2010” Selected for International Exhibit of Decisive Moments

Beginning in January, the Mpls Photo Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, will display my photograph Childhood, 2010 in their exhibit Off the Cuff: The Spontaneous and Unrehearsed. This exhibit, juried by Madeline Yale, is the first scheduled exhibit of my work for 2012.

Childhood, 2010 depicts a decisive moment of children at play during the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Telluride, Colorado.

A listing of work accepted for the exhibit has been posted.

Off the Cuff: The Spontaneous and Unrehearsed can be viewed from January 20 through February 26, in the Second Floor Galleries, at Mpls Photo Center, located at 2400 North Second Street, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The gallery is open from 12noon – 6pm daily. Opening reception will be Friday, January 20 from 7:00 – 10:00pm.

New Photograph to be Publicly Unveiled at The Kiernan Gallery

Early next month, The Kiernan Gallery in Lexington, Virginia, will display my photograph Triptych: Thermal Soaring, 2010 in their exhibit In Time. This show, juried by Blake Fitch, will be the second exhibit host by this newly opened gallery, owned and operated by Kat Kiernan.

Triptych: Thermal Soaring, 2010 was photographed in front of my home in Ransom Canyon, Texas. Photographed from one vantage point over a series of seconds, the photograph depicts the movement of vultures riding thermal updrafts above the rim of the canyon on a summer afternoon.

This will be the first time this photograph as been publicly displayed.

A virtual gallery of the exhibit has been posted.

In Time can be viewed from December 6 through January 7 at The Kiernan Gallery, located at 23B West Washington Street, in Lexington, Virginia. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11am-5pm.

Photographs Chosen for Four Corners of the Earth Exhibit

Opening next week, Darkroom Gallery in Essex Junction, Vermont, will display two of my photographs in their exhibit Four Corners of the Earth. The show was juried by noted landscape photographer George DeWolfe.

My photos that were selected include Adrift, 2011 and Storm, Sandoval County, New Mexico, 2009. An online gallery of the exhibit has been posted by the gallery.

Adrift, 2011, was recently photographed at Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center in Orange, Texas. Reminiscent of an impressionist painting and invoking a romantic mood, the surrealist and dream-like color photograph captures the reflection of cypress trees in a pond containing floating leaves.

A limited edition print of Adrift, 2011, framed by international award-winning fine art framers John and Phyliss Nazworth, can be viewed and is available for purchase at Pinehurst Gallery in Orange, Texas.

Pinehurst Gallery and Custom Picture Framing (409-882-9008) is located at 2498 Martin Luther King, Suite C, in Orange, Texas. The gallery is open Tuesday-Friday, 10am-5pm, and Saturday, 10 am-2pm.

Photographs Selected for High And Dry XI Exhibition

Opening this week, the International Cultural Center at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas will exhibit my work High and Dry, 2009 and Storm over Point Lookout, 2010 in their juried exhibit High and Dry XI. Juror O. Rufus Lovett selected photos for the exhibit.

Friends having work featured in the exhibit include: Marti Belcher, Steve Goff, Craig Kelley, Mac Rowley, Sharon Shero, Beckwith Thompson, Ashton Thornhill, and Bill Wright.

High and Dry XI can be viewed from November 22 through January 13 at the International Cultural Center at Texas Tech University (806-742-2974), located at 601 Indiana Avenue, in Lubbock, Texas. I am happy to announce that earlier this week my portfolio Hurricane Ike: Images from the Debris Field was selected for publication on the blog get addicted to . . .. The editors of the blog found the portfolio via its Internet presence and publication on my website, F-Stop Magazine (Issue #49), and Silvershotz. It’s nice to know that word about the portfolio is getting out and is being well received. Copies of the 2011 Silvershotz Folios, which includes my portfolio Hurricane Ike: Images from the Debris Field is now available for order on the Silvershotz website for $10.00 USD each.

This is the 4th annual Folios, and includes the work of 31 photographers from 12 countries for the prestigious publication. Silvershotz distributes 10,000 folio journals to 1400 bookstores in 17 countries plus a further 2,000 journals are mailed free of charge to leading galleries and institutions in 19 countries.

The Silvershotz 2011 Folios journal is a special edition collection of contemporary emerging artists who are carefully selected by a jury panel of industry experts. Photographers from around the world must submit a folio of 15 images. The images are selected on the following criteria: technical skills, a themed and cohesive body of work, consistent excellence in every image in the folio and the intellect behind the folios presented.

Previous folio participants have been offered one person exhibitions, have had their work reproduced in publications and sold more work to collectors.

This past weekend saw the opening and artists’ reception of the num6ers exhibit at A Smith Gallery in Johnson City, Texas. The exhibit, juried by Amanda Smith, owner/director of A Smith Gallery, and Carol Watson, includes my work Windmill Triptych, 2008.

Earlier this month, the Geological Society of America (GSA) Annual Meeting and Exposition was held at the Minneapolis Convention Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. During the meeting, the 3rd Annual GSA Photo Exhibit was exhibited at the convention center from October 9-12.

Juried by Dr. Ellen Bishop, Dr. Marli Miller, and Dr. Steve Weaver, the exhibit included my works The Twelve Apostles #1, 2011 (Second Place – Geological Processes Past and Present Category) and The Goosenecks of the San Juan River, 2007 (Honorable Mention – Iconic Landscapes Category).

I was able to make these photographs of the exhibit during the convention.

Earlier this month, Mpls Photo Center, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, opened their juried exhibit entitled, Where in the World: People, Places, Events. The exhibit, juried by Toby Kamps, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Menil Collection in Houston, Texas, includes my work Triptych: Crystal Beach, Texas after Hurricane Ike, 2008 and Windsor Ruins, 2002.

I was in Minneapolis for a geological convention this month, which coincidentally coincided with the opening of the Where in the World exhibit, and was able to make a few photographs of the exhibit.

Where in the World can be viewed now through November 28 at the Mpls Photo Center (612-643-3511), located at 2400 North Second Street, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The gallery is open daily from 12pm – 6pm.

Hurricane Ike Portfolio Featured in Two Prestigious International Publications

I am happy to announce that my photographic portfolio Hurricane Ike: Images from the Debris Field, has been selected to be featured in two prestigious international publications this fall.

On October 1, twenty photographs from the series were featured in the current issue of F-Stop Magazine (Issue #49 – October/November 2011), an online magazine showcasing contemporary photography from emerging and contemporary photographers worldwide. The photographs were selected to be part of F-Stop’s annual portfolio issue.

In addition, the portfolio has also been selected for inclusion in the 2011 Silvershotz Folios. This journal of contemporary photography is distributed worldwide, with the 2011 Folios being published later this year. Major booksellers sell and can order the journal, but it can also be purchased online.

Work for both issues is selected through a jury review only and is highly competitive, so I feel honored to have had the portfolio selected for both journals. Still the work continues, for although most of the images in the portfolio were shot within a month after Hurricane Ike struck Galveston in 2008, the portfolio is still growing. Sifting through the thousands of images to make the finished photographs has taken much time and the work continues. Photographs from the series can be seen on my website, with new photos being added as production of the series continues.

Photographs from Hurricane Ike Series to be Exhibited at PhotoNOLA

On December 10, I will participate in Photowalk, exhibiting several photographs from my series “Hurricane Ike: Images from the Debris Field”. Photowalk is a one-night-only exhibit at the PhotoNOLA 2011 Annual Festival of Photography in New Orleans, Louisiana. The free and open to the public exhibit will showcase the 65 photographers who are attending PhotoNOLA’s photo review sessions.

Photographs from the Hurricane Ike series can be viewed on my website.

PhotoNOLA 2011’s Photowalk will be held on Saturday, December 10, from 5pm-7pm on the second floor of the International House Hotel Conference Facility, 220 Camp Street, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Rita and Ike Hurricane Photographs Chosen for International Exhibit

Later this fall and winter, the 12 12 Gallery in Richmond, Virginia will display two photographs that depict the horrors of hurricanes Rita (2005) and Ike (2008) in the 2011 International Juried Photographic Exhibition. Juror Amalia Pizzardi selected Grave Exhumed by Hurricane Rita, 2008, a photograph made near Grand Chenier, Louisiana, and Port Bolivar Community Cemetery, 2008, a photo from my award-winning series Hurricane Ike: Images from the Debris Field.

12 12 Gallery has also posted an online gallery of the exhibit.

Also this month, Port Bolivar Community Cemetery, 2008 will be on display in Portland, Oregon at the Newspace Center for Photography in their 3rd Annual Members’ Showcase exhibit (October 7-30).

The 2011 International Photography Exhibition can be viewed from October 28 through January 15 at the 12 12 Gallery (804-233-9957), located at Zero E. 4th Street #39, in Richmond, Virginia. Opening in November, Photoplace Gallery in Middlebury, Vermont will exhibit my work Adrift, 2011 in their international exhibit Again: Reflections and Photography.

Adrift, 2011, was recently photographed at Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center in Orange, Texas. Reminiscent of an impressionist painting and invoking a romantic mood, the surrealist and dream-like color photograph captures the reflection of cypress trees in a pond containing floating leaves.

Juror Sylvia de Swaan selected the photo from approximately 950 photographs submitted internationally to be included in the exhibit. Born in Romania, de Swaan is a New York-based fine art photographer whose photographic work focuses on “themes that include personal history, individual and collective memory and identity, the state of the world and the neighborhood where I live. I’m interested in the construction of narrative and how meaning is created through juxtaposition and editing.”

Photoplace Gallery has posted an online gallery of Again: Reflections and Photography.

Presently, a limited edition print of Adrift, 2011, framed by international award-winning fine art framers John and Phyliss Nazworth, can be viewed and is available for purchase at Pinehurst Gallery in Orange, Texas.

New Photographs to be Exhibited at Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Exhibits

Beginning September 30 and running through mid-November two new photographs from my series Embracing the Light:Perspectives on Mortality will be on exhibit at galleries in Lubbock, Texas for the annual Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration.

The Buddy Holly Center’s Fine Art Gallery will open their exhibit, Celebración, Friday, September 30. The exhibit will run through Sunday, November 6 and will be exhibiting my photograph The Eldest Child, 2011. The photograph was made at a cemetery on the Brandon Hall Plantation north of Natchez, Mississippi. The small cemetery is the resting place of eight of the Brandon’s twelve children. Seven of these children died in their youth before the death of their parents, with six of them dying before becoming teenagers. A few years ago, someone that visited the cemetery took enough of an interest so as to develop a website detailing a history of the family, including the stories of how each of the children died. It’s a very interesting!

The International Cultural Center at Texas Tech University will open their Día de los Muertos exhibit, Friday, October 21. The exhibit will run through Thursday, November 17 and will be exhibiting my photograph San Juan Mission Cemetery #1, 2009. It was made near Farmington, New Mexico and exhibits hundreds of white crosses marking the nameless graves of Navaho Indians. The cemetery dates to the early twentieth-century.

Both exhibits will be part of the annual Día de los Muertos Procesión, to be held in Lubbock on Friday, October 28 from 5pm – 10pm.

Next month, Lightbox Photographic Gallery in Astoria, Oregon will exhibit my work Terlingua, 2008 in their exhibit Spooky Show III. Jurors for the exhibit were Chelsea and Michael Granger, Directors of Lightbox Photographic Gallery. The exhibit will showcase photographs that are “haunting, mysterious, spooky or creepy in mood or subject, images that create a sense of unease, while maintaining an element of beauty.”

Two Photographs Win International Awards from the Geological Society of America

I am honored to have had two photographs win awards in the 3rd Annual Geological Society of America Photo Exhibit. An exhibit of winning photographs will be on display from October 9 – 12 at the Minneapolis Convention Center, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during the 2011 Geological Society of America Annual Meeting.

Jurors for the exhibit were: Dr.Ellen Bishop, Dr. Marli Miller, and Dr. Steve Weaver.

Photograph Selected for The Nature of Trees International Exhibit

Next month, Photoplace Gallery in Middlebury, Vermont will exhibit my work Windsor Ruins, 2002 in their exhibit The Nature of Trees. Juror Sean Kernan selected the photo from approximately 1600 photographs submitted internationally to be included in the forty-piece exhibit. Photoplace Gallery has posted an online gallery of the exhibit.

The Nature of Trees can be viewed from October 11 through November 5 at Photoplace Gallery (802-989-2359), located at 3 Park Street, in Middlebury, Vermont. Hurricane Ike Photo Selected for Showcase Exhibition in Oregon

In early October, the Newspace Center for Photography, in Portland, Oregon, will open their 3rd Annual Members’ Showcase Exhibition. This juried exhibit will include my photograph Port Bolivar Community Cemetery, 2008, from my series Hurricane Ike: Images from the Debris Field. The exhibition was juried by Newspace Executive Director Chris Bennett and Staff.

The 3rd Annual Members’ Showcase Exhibition can be viewed from October 7 – 30 at the Newspace Center for Photography, located at 1632 SE 10th Avenue, in Portland, Oregon. I recently learned that my photograph, Nail, Screws, and Nuts, 2008, was awarded Third Place in the Open Category of the PHOTOcentric 2011 exhibit. The photo is from my series: Hurricane Ike: Images from the Debris Field.

PHOTOcentric 2011 was juried by Larry Fink and Stephan Perloff and will be on display at the Garrison Art Center in Garrison, New York from September 10 through October 2.

TPS 20th International Competition Exhibition Artists’ and Public Reception

This past Saturday, August 27, saw the exhibit opening of the TexasPhotographic Society’s 20th International Competition. The exhibit, which will tour galleries throughout Texas for one year, premiered at A Smith Gallery in Johnson City, Texas.

Included in this show is my work Storm, Sandoval County, New Mexico, 2009. It was one of 60 photographs chosen for the exhibit out of 939 photos submitted in the competition from around the world. Juror for the exhibit was Arno Rafael Minkkinen, Professor of Art at the University of Massachusetts – Lowell.

In addition to my print being selected for the show, it was also selected for use on the poster announcing the exhibit!

Black and White 2011 Artists’ and Public Reception

On Friday, August 5, The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado held it’s Artists’ and Public Reception for their Black and White 2011 exhibit. The exhibit included my work Childhood, 2010, one of 46 photographs chosen for the exhibit out of 3,048 photos submitted in the competition from around the world. Photographs from the reception seen below were provided by the gallery.

Juror for the exhibit was Catherine Edelman, of the Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago.

With the opening of Black and White 2011 on June 17, the gallery also uploaded a virtual gallery of the exhibit for those that cannot view the exhibit in-person.

Photograph Commemorating Texas Blues Artist Selected for Exhibit in Oregon

Early next month, the newly opened Black Box Gallery in Portland, Oregon will exhibit my photograph ‘Gatemouth’ Brown, 2008 in the exhibit Still Life: Objects, Images and Patterns juried by Lori Nik.

Nik is a New York-based still life photographer, recognized internationally for her meticulously detailed, hand created, models that appear real and documentary. Having won numerous awards for her photography, her work has been exhibited and collected internationally.

The photograph ‘Gatemouth’ Brown, 2008 is of the grave of a Grammy award-winning blues artists from my hometown of Orange, Texas. Gatemouth was in ill health and living in New Orleans in the summer of 2005. While evacuating from Hurricane Katrina, Gatemouth succumbed to his illness. Locals speculate that the three jars of grape jelly on his tomb, left by an admirer, refer to a song about grape jelly that Gatemouth wrote. Coincidentally, the photograph I made of his grave was produced a few weeks before Hurricane Ike struck the area all but destroying the cemetery.

Later this month, A Smith Gallery in Johnson City, Texas will be the first host of the Texas Photographic Society’s 20th International Competition Exhibition. My photograph Storm, Sandoval County, New Mexico, 2009 was selected for this exhibit by the competition’s juror, Arno Rafael Minkkinen, from approximately 1000 photographs submitted by 150 artists.

Minkkinen, Professor of Art at the University of Massachusetts – Lowell, has been published and exhibited internationally. Some of the collections in which his work resides include the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Massachusettes, the Centre Pompidou and Musée d’Art Moderne in Paris, the Musée de l’Élysée in Lausanne, the Center for Creative Photography in Arizona, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. He has published six monographs: Frostbite (1978), Waterline (1994, winner of the 25th Rencontres d’Arles Book Prize), Body Land (1999), SAGA: The Journey of Arno Rafael Minkkinen, 35 Years of Photographs (2005), Homework: The Finnish Photographs (2008), and Balanced Equation (2010).

The Texas Photographic Society’s 20th International Competition Exhibition can be viewed from August 26 through September 25 at A Smith Gallery (e-mail), located at 105 N Nugent Avenue, in Johnson City, Texas. The gallery is open Fridays and Saturdays from 11am – 6pm and Sundays from 11am – 3pm. Artists’ reception will be held on Saturday, August 27 from 4pm-7pm.

Photographs Selected for Where in the World Exhibition

Opening in October, Mpls Photo Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota will exhibit my work Triptych: Crystal Beach, Texas after Hurricane Ike, 2008 and Windsor Ruins, 2002 in their exhibit entitled Where in the World. Juror Toby Kamps, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Menil Collection in Houston, Texas selected the photos. Mpls Photo Center has posted an online listing of photos selected for the exhibit.

A graduate of the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art and the Getty Museum Leadership Institute, Kamps has written on contemporary art and artists for numerous exhibition catalogues and magazines. He has been Senior Curator at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston; Director of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Maine College of Art, Portland; and Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.

Where in the World can be viewed from October 7 through November 27 at the Mpls Photo Center (612-643-3511), located at 2400 North Second Street, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The gallery is open daily from 12pm – 6pm. Artists’ reception will be held on Friday, October 14 from 7pm-10pm.

Being long overdue, my website has finally been updated. There have been so many changes and additions, that “updated” is really a poor word choice to describe this launch. It’s been rebuilt from the ground-up!

Although it retains the stylistic feel of the former site, it is much easier to navigate and represents my work much better. Major additions and updates include: updated and new portfolios, containing numerous new images; updated and expanded exhibition history and current exhibits; new publications page, with links to catalogs from juried exhibitions; Facebook link; link to an external blog that is also being introduced with this update; and numerous other enhancements that make the website much more effective and efficient.

Hurricane Ike Photograph Selected for New York Gallery

Opening in September, the juried exhibit PHOTOcentric 2011 will include Nails, Screws, and Nuts, 2008, a photograph from my series Hurricane Ike: Images from the Debris Field.

PHOTOcentric will be exhibited at the Garrison Art Center in Garrison, New York. Located an hour north of New York City, the gallery is situated on the banks of the Hudson River directly across from West Point Military Academy.

Jurors for PHOTOcentric were photographer Larry Fink and Stephan Perloff.

Larry Fink is a professional photographer who has won National Endowment of the Arts and Guggenheim Fellowships. He has had solo exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Art, in addition to several exhibits in Europe.

Stephan Perloff is the founder and editor of The Photo Review as well as the editor of The Photograph Collector.

PHOTOcentric 2011 can be viewed from September 10 through October 2 at the Garrison Art Center (845-424-3960), located at 23 Garrison’s Landing, in Garrison, New York. The gallery is open Tuesday-Sunday 10am – 5pm. Artists’ reception will be held on Saturday, September 17 from 6-8pm.

Next month, Photoplace Gallery in Middlebury, Vermont will exhibit my work Grand Gulf, 2008 in their exhibit The Poetry of Shadows. Juror Catherine Z. Anderson, Associate Professor of Art at the University of Montana (academic website), selected the photo from approximately 1000 photographs submitted internationally. Photoplace Gallery has posted an online gallery of the exhibit.

This exhibit complements a previous exhibit at the gallery from this past spring entitled The Language of Light. Light was juried by Paul Paletti, owner of the Paul Paletti Gallery in Louisville, Kentucky, who chose my photo Storm over Point Lookout, 2010 from over 1300 images submitted internationally for that exhibit. Photoplace Gallery also has posted an online gallery of the exhibit as well.

Later this month, Darkroom Gallery in Essex Junction, Vermont, will display two of my photographs in their exhibit Down on the Farm. The show was juried by renowned portrait and documentary photographer Paul Mobley (blog) who recently authored a book the book American Farmer: Portraits from the Heartland (Amazon).

My photos that were selected include, Barbed Wire, 2006 and Farm, Montrose, Colorado, 2011. A virtual gallery of the exhibit has been posted.

To celebrate the Fourth of July, Aline Smithson’s blog, Lenscratch, has opened an online gallery exhibition entitled Summer, which features my photograph Childhood, 2010.

Photographs Receive International Award, B&W Special Issue #84 Available for Purchase Worldwide

This week, the Special Issue #84 of B&W + Color featuring the 2011 Black and White Portfolio Competition Awards arrived on newsstands in the US and Europe.

Of the 498 international artists that submitted over 8,000 photographs for the competition, work from my project Hurricane Ike: Images from the Debris Field was selected for a Merit Award. From that series of photos, three images from the project were published in this issue on pages 90-91: Beatles Record, 2008; Electric Stove Coil, 2008; and Playboy, Vol. 33, No. 12 – December, 1986, 2008.

Published in over 50 countries, B&W + Color is a prestigious photographic journal featuring black and white and, beginning recently, color fine art photography from international artists. Issue #84 can be purchased in the US at major booksellers (Barnes & Nobel, Books-a-Million, Borders Books, Book People, etc.) and newsstands, as well as online via B&W + Color’s website.

As I’m currently in Melbourne, Australia, the magazine will not be available here for several more weeks. Thankfully, Marie-Louise Cadosch (blog), a photographer from Switzerland also featured in the issue with a Merit Award, was kind enough to provide a scan of the magazine cover and pages featuring my work.

This past Friday, June 3, The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado held it’s Artists’ and Public Reception for their Center Forward 2011 exhibit. The exhibit included my work Grave Exhibited by Hurricane Rita, 2008, which was one of 57 photographs chosen for the exhibit out of 2,675 photos submitted in the competition from around the world. The photograph from the reception seen below was provided by the gallery.

Juror for the exhibit was Hamidah Glasgow. She is Executive Director of The Center for Fine Art Photography and has been a reviewer at several major international photographic festivals including PhotoLA, FotoFest, Critical Mass, and Photolucida 2011.

Illuminance Opens in Lubbock, Photograph Awarded First Place!

Last night, the juried photographic exhibit Illuminance opened at the Buddy Holly Center Fine Arts Gallery, in Lubbock, Texas.

Of the six photographs of mine chosen for the exhibit, Who'll put flowers on a flower's grave?, 2010 was awarded First Place. Made at a catholic cemetery in New Iberia, Louisiana, it depicts an empty vault containing discarded flowers. The photograph’s title was inspired from the lyrics of a Tom Waits song entitled: Flower’s Grave.

Illuminance was juried by Jill Enfield, a professional photographer who specializes in fine art, editorial and commercial photography and currently a professor at the Parsons The New School for Design in New York City.

This is the second consecutive time my work has been honored at Illuminance. Javelina Draw - Black and White, 2005 was awarded the Juror Award at the last installment of Illuminance in 2007 by juror Cliff Deal, photographer, photo historian, and Director of Museums for the Louisiana Department of State Museums.

My other work on display in Illuminance include: Childhood, 2010; Grand Gulf, 2008; Santa Elena Canyon, 2009; Secluded Relic, 2002; and Storm over Point Lookout, 2010.

Illuminance, a biennial juried photographic exhibition, will be on display at the Buddy Holly Center Fine Art Gallery (806-775-3560) from now until June 12. The gallery is located at 1801 Crickets Avenue in Lubbock, Texas. Illuminance will be featured on Lubbock's First Friday Art Trail on May 6 and June 3.

After Illuminance closes on June 12, Flowers will be part of the International Juried Works on Paper exhibit at the 12 12 Gallery in Richmond, Virginia from June 24 through August 19.

I learned today that one of my photographic portfolios has won an Award of Merit in the 2011 B&W + Color Portfolio Competition. Several of the photographs from the winning portfolio will be printed in the June 2011 special issue of B&W + Color (Issue #84), a professional photographic journal available in over 50 countries.

I entered more than one portfolio at the time of submission and do not yet know which portfolio was selected for this award. As soon as I know which portfolio was awarded and which images were chosen for printing, I will post an update.

Again, the 2011 B&W + Color Portfolio Competition special issue (Issue #84) will be available in early June in over 50 counties (in about three weeks!). This summer, the 12 12 Gallery in Richmond, Virginia will display a recent work of mine in their exhibit, the International Juried Works on Paper. Works on Paper was juried by Dan Welden, a master printmaker, painter, teacher, and author. He is the inventor of the Solarplate method of printmaking and co-author, with Pauline Muir, of Printmaking in the Sun.

The International Juried Works on Paper can be viewed from June 24 through August 19 at the 12 12 Gallery (804-233-9957), located at Zero E. 4th Street #39, in Richmond, Virginia. The gallery is open Thursday-Friday, 12:pm-4pm, Saturday, 11am-6pm, Sunday, 12 pm-5pm, and by appointment. Opening, artists’ reception, and juror gallery talk will be Friday, June 24.

The Center for Fine Art Photography Opens Online Gallery for Center Forward 2011

With the opening of Center Forward 2011 at The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado, the gallery has also uploaded a virtual gallery of the exhibit for those that cannot view the exhibit in-person.

Juror for the exhibit was Hamidah Glasgow. She is Executive Director of The Center for Fine Art Photography and has been a reviewer at several major international photographic festivals including PhotoLA, FotoFest, Critical Mass, and Photolucida 2011.

My work, Grave Exhibited by Hurricane Rita, 2008, was one of 57 photographs chosen for the exhibit out of 2,675 photos submitted in the competition from around the world.

The exhibit is on display now through June 11, with public and artists’ reception on Saturday, June 3, from 6-9pm.

The Center for Fine Art Photography (970-224-1010) is located in the Poudre River Arts Center at 400 North College Avenue in Fort Collins, Colorado. The gallery is open Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, and Saturday, 10am-3pm.

New Print on Display at Pinehurst Gallery!

This week saw the unveiling of a new print of mine! Adrift, 2011, was recently photographed at Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center in Orange, Texas. Reminiscent of an impressionist painting and invoking a romantic mood, the surrealist and dream-like color photograph captures the reflection of cypress trees in a pond containing floating leaves.

A limited edition of the print was framed by international award-winning fine art framers John and Phyliss Nazworth of Pinehurst Gallery in Orange, Texas. The print is now on display at their gallery and is available for view and purchase.

Pinehurst Gallery and Custom Picture Framing (409-882-9008) is located at 2498 Martin Luther King, Suite C, in Orange, Texas. The gallery is open Tuesday-Friday, 10am-5pm, and Saturday, 10 am-2pm.

Texas National 2011 Opens in Nacogdoches

Día de los Muertos Exhibit Openings, Friday, October 29

Everyone,

I would like to invite you all to the openings of two Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) exhibits in Lubbock this Friday, October 29, where will I have photographic work exhibited. The exhibits showing my work will be at the International Cultural Center (ICC) on the Texas Tech campus and at the Buddy Holly Center (BHC). The ICC opening will be from 5:00 pm-6:30 pm, and the BHC opening will being at 6pm.

The work I have on exhibit this year include, a photograph of the Port Bolivar Community Cemetery, after being ravaged by Hurricane Ike. This image, on display at the ICC through mid-November, is a part of my Hurricane Ike Debris Fields series and was jury-selected for this year's Texas Photographic Society's 24th Members' Only Show, displayed at Baylor University's Martin Museum of Art.

In honor of the grand reopening of the BHC Fine Art Gallery, I made a special panoramic photograph for their Celebración exhibit. On display at the BHC through early December, the nearly five-foot long photograph depicts the desecrated Orviss Vault, located in Calvert, Texas. Built in the 1870's, the mausoleum began as the final resting place of D.A. Orviss and his wife until the vault was looted for possible valuables. The bodies have since been removed by human intruders and/or animals, and only smashed, empty coffins remain inside the vault. Left neglected and abandoned in the woods of East Texas for nearly a century, the cemetery has become the subject of many ghost stories and paranormal investigations.

Ashmore Shows Photographic Work in National Juried Exhibit at Austin Gallery

11 October 2010 – Richard Allen Ashmore, a national award-winning photographer, has been selected to show his photograph The Poet, 2006 in the juried exhibit 'Essence: The Truth in the Portrait' in Austin at Austin Details Art + Photo Gallery from 14 – 30 October 2010. The exhibit's opening reception will take place at the gallery on Friday, October 15, from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. The public is invited to attend the opening reception and admission is free.

Ashmore’s photograph was selected for exhibit along with work from nine other artists from throughout the United States. 'Essence: Portrait' is a nationally competitive photography exhibit, produced and juried by Jann Alexander founder/director of Austin Details Art + Photo Gallery.

In addition to the jury-selected work, the exhibit also will highlight art by internationally acclaimed portrait photographer William Coupon. Coupon, an artist from New York City, has photographed numerous United States presidents, world leaders, and entertainment and sports celebrities, among other iconic figures.

Like Coupon, all jury-selected artists in this exhibit have taken a non-traditional approach to portraiture. "We’re presenting ten artists who portray their subjects’ hidden qualities--the essence--in their portraits", said Alexander.

Ashmore's work, The Poet, 2006, is a portrait of Michael Frels, an artist Ashmore knew when he lived in Lubbock, Texas. The image, taken at a quaint coffee shop, is a composite digital photograph. "It was Michael's idea to shoot a panoramic portrait", said Ashmore. "Shooting a near life-sized composite portrait can be very tedious and time-consuming, and Michael's expression gives this photograph an intimacy and a timelessness all its own . . . he was as much an artist in front of my camera that night as he is with his own creative endeavors."

This is the third time The Poet, 2006 has been selected for juried exhibitions in Texas, being selected for display at 'Illuminance 2007', at the Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock, and for 'The Texas Photographic Society's 23rd Annual Members' Only Show', at the Dishman Art Museum at Lamar University in Beaumont.

A geologist, biologist and artist, Ashmore’s documentary work reveals his interests and professional training in the sciences, art, human nature, history, and architecture. Many of his photographs are high-resolution composite panoramic images. Over the past several years, he has experimented with and employed low and wide-angle techniques to give his photographs a sense of intimacy, producing for the viewer an illusion of being with the photographer at the time the photographs were taken. Many of his photographic subjects have been affected by human interaction and, thus, reflect part of the human condition and society's impact on the environment and each other.

Ashmore is represented in Texas by Pinehurst Gallery in Orange and The Spirit of the West Gallery in Alpine. Since 2006, he has presented work in 33 exhibits, including 11 national juried exhibitions, four solo exhibitions, and seven invitation-only exhibitions. He has been awarded two national first place awards at juried exhibitions and has work permanently archived and on display at Texas Tech University’s Southwest Collection and Lamar University’s Department of Earth and Space Sciences in addition to numerous private collections.
